Our world is increasingly intertwined with technology, and the advent of digital devices and platforms has revolutionised the way we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves. However, the ubiquity of these technologies has also given rise to a growing concern: technology overuse and addiction. As our reliance on digital tools deepens, researchers and mental health professionals are sounding the alarm on the potential psychological and social consequences of compulsive technology use.
In this article, we delve into the complexities of technology addiction, exploring its definitions, diagnostic criteria, and the ongoing debates surrounding its legitimacy. We examine the psychological mechanisms that underpin addictive behaviours, and how design elements within digital products can inadvertently contribute to these patterns. Furthermore, we shed light on the role of user experience (UX) design in shaping user engagement, and the ethical implications that arise when design strategies inadvertently foster compulsive behaviours.
Understanding Technology Addiction
Technology addiction, often referred to as digital addiction or Internet addiction, is characterised by an individual's uncontrollable use of digital devices and platforms, which can lead to psychological and social issues. It can be defined as a subtype of behavioural addiction where a person is compulsively engaged in non-substance-related behaviours (e.g., internet use, gaming) that are rewarding in the short term but harmful in the long term.
Young (1998) was among the first to operationalise Internet addiction, characterising it through symptoms similar to those of gambling addiction, such as withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, and negative repercussions on personal life. She also created the first questionnaire to measure internet addiction, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) — here’s a copy of the test in case you want to test how you’re doing. This work laid the groundwork for future research on digital addiction, including its psychological mechanisms and impacts on mental health.
Subsequent studies have identified specific factors contributing to technology addiction, such as the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), instant gratification, and social comparison (Elhai, Dvorak, Levine, & Hall, 2017). These factors are often exacerbated by design elements within digital products, such as infinite scrolling and notification systems, designed to increase user engagement but potentially leading to overuse.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has recognised Internet Gaming Disorder as a condition warranting more clinical research and experience before being considered for inclusion as a standard disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This acknowledgment is consistent with the growing concern among researchers and mental health professionals regarding technology's impact on behavioural health1.
Criticisms and Challenges
While the concept of technology addiction is widely recognised, it has not been without criticism. Some scholars argue that calling it an "addiction" may pathologize normal behaviour, especially since digital engagement is an integral part of modern life (Kardefelt-Winther, 2017). Critics also point out the lack of a standardised diagnostic criteria and the risk of overdiagnosis, suggesting that what is often labeled as addiction might be better understood as problematic use not necessarily rooted in the technology itself but in underlying psychological conditions.
Moreover, evidence on technology addiction is mixed, with studies showing varying degrees of impact on mental health. Some research suggests significant psychological distress and impairment in individuals with high levels of technology use, while other studies indicate minimal long-term effects, suggesting that individual differences and context play a significant role in the manifestation of addiction-like symptoms (Billieux et al., 2015). As a result some research propose using terms like "problematic use" that encompass a wider range of experiences to avoid pathologising normal behaviours.
The Role of UX Design in Technology Addiction
UX design focuses on creating products that offer meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This involves understanding user behaviours, needs, and motivations to design intuitive and user-friendly interfaces. However, the principles that make an app or website appealing can also contribute to addictive behaviours.
Nir Eyal's "Hook Model" (2014) outlines how products can create habit-forming behaviours in users through a cycle of trigger, action, variable reward, and investment. While this model can be used to build positive habits, it also raises ethical questions when applied in ways that contribute to technology addiction.
Research by Fogg (2009) on Persuasive Technology further explains how digital products are designed to change user behaviours in a predetermined way. Fogg emphasises the role of "motivation," "ability," and "triggers" in influencing user actions, which can be leveraged for both beneficial and detrimental outcomes, depending on the designer's intent.
A recent review by Flayelle et al. (2023) identified the following technology design features that promote potentially addictive online behaviours:
Reinforcement schedules and user engagement: Many digital platforms employ variable ratio reinforcement schedules, similar to gambling mechanisms, where rewards (e.g., likes, notifications) are delivered unpredictably. This unpredictability is a powerful motivator for continued engagement, as it taps into deep-seated psychological processes related to reward anticipation and acquisition (Flayelle et al., 2023). By engaging users in a cycle of anticipation, action, and reward, platforms can significantly enhance user engagement and time spent on an app or website. However, this heightened engagement comes with the risk of fostering problematic behaviour patterns, as users continually seek the dopamine rush associated with these unpredictable rewards.
Personalisation and cue reactivity: Personalised triggers, such as notifications tailored to users' past behaviours, exploit cue reactivity, compelling users toward repeated engagement. Cue reactivity involves the psychological urge that these tailored cues trigger, making them hard to ignore due to their personalised nature. This design strategy not only challenges users’ self-control abilities but also taps into a deeper psychological loop of anticipation and reward. Each personalised notification acts as a potent cue, directly linking to past rewarding interactions on the platform, thus making the urge to engage stronger and the notifications more enticing.
Interference with deliberative decision-making: Features like autoplay on streaming services disrupt deliberative thinking, pushing users towards more impulsive behaviours. Such design choices capitalise on the human tendency to favour immediate gratification, making it increasingly difficult for users to make conscious, reflective decisions about their online activity.
Partial goal fulfilment: The design of many online platforms ensures that user goals are never fully satisfied, continuously introducing new rewards and objectives. This approach keeps users in a perpetual state of engagement, chasing after the next achievement or piece of content, which can lead to patterns of behaviour that closely resemble addiction.
Exploitation of vulnerabilities: Flayelle et al. (2023) also emphasise how online environments are adept at exploiting user vulnerabilities, adapting content to match personal motivations and thereby enhancing the platform's addictive potential.
Many of those strategies are employing psychology to lead to increased engagement and keep users coming back. A study by Montag et al. (2019) analysed a number of popular apps and identified several psychological mechanisms informing designs that have the potential to be addictive:
Continuous scrolling/streaming: Most of us are familiar with this; a video comes to an end on platforms like YouTube, then another video with similar content or the next episode in a series automatically plays. This seamless continuation draws viewers deeper, making it challenging to disengage.
Endowment and mere-exposure effects: Each visit and time investment we make when using an app platform makes leaving or uninstalling it increasingly difficult. The sense of ownership (endowment effect) and the increased affinity for an app or game due to repeated exposure (mere-exposure effect) both contribute to this attachment.
Social pressure dynamics: An example from WhatsApp illustrates this: sending a message and seeing two grey ticks indicates delivery to the recipient's phone; these ticks turn blue once the message is read. Knowing these indicators, both sender and recipient may feel compelled to respond swiftly, especially after reading a message.
Curating user preferences: Apps like Facebook and Instagram meticulously analyse each user's activity to tailor the Newsfeed with content most likely to engage them personally, aiming to present only the most captivating information and prevent boredom or the closing of the browser window.
Social comparison and rewards: A key component of social reinforcement in media is the 'thumbs up' or 'Like' button, signifying positive feedback for a post, either given or received, thereby encouraging social interaction and comparison.
Zeigarnik and Ovsiankina effects: These effects highlight a stronger recall for tasks that have been interrupted, with a tendency to return and complete these tasks later. For instance, in Freemium games like Candy Crush Saga, particularly challenging levels are termed as “super hard.” Failing these levels due to their difficulty can lead to emotional frustration, tempting players to purchase extra lives or in-game energy to continue, especially if the next level is very close.
Guidelines for UX Designers
As UX professionals we play an important role in ensuring our work is ethical and not promoting problematic behaviours. Here are some guidelines we can follow to do this:
Conduct user testing focused on digital well-being: Regularly test new features aiming to increase engagement with a focus on their impact on users' digital well-being. Seek feedback on how design choices affect users' ability to manage their technology use effectively.
Implement usage limit features: Where appropriate, integrate features that allow users to set limits on their usage. For example, app timers or reminders that prompt users to take breaks after extended periods of use can be effective tools for managing screen time.
Prioritise user control and customisation: Design interfaces that give users control over their digital environment. This could mean customisable notification settings, content filters, or options to opt-out of potentially addictive features like autoplay.
Reflect on your decisions: Regularly evaluate the ethical implications of design decisions. Consider setting up an ethics review board within your organisation to assess new features and their potential impact on user well-being.
Stay informed and seek expert assistance: It’s important to stay up to date with the latest research on technology addiction and digital well-being, especially if your work is in a relevant area. In some cases, collaborate with psychologists, researchers, and other professionals to incorporate evidence-based strategies into design practices.
Case Studies
Before we conclude, let’s have a look at some examples of how design can try preventing the risk of addiction (or problematic behaviours).
Instagram's "You're All Caught Up" Feature: Instagram introduced a message that lets users know they have seen all new posts from the last two days, aiming to prevent endless scrolling. This feature is a step towards encouraging users to engage with the platform more intentionally, rather than compulsively.
Apple's Screen Time: Apple's introduction of the Screen Time feature allows users to monitor their device usage, set limits for specific apps, and schedule downtime. This empowers users to be more mindful of their digital habits and make informed decisions about their technology use.
